The legend goes that Jake Long was abducted by Cherokee Indians in his youth and, during his abduction, he was in the same area of "Lizzie Bear", a full-blooded Cherokee Indian maid. Jake and Lizzie fell in love and Jake made his way back to civilization where he and Lizzie had many children and lived happily ever after. The legend tells us that Hannah's mother was named Minerva Bear.. and guess what? We found a Minerva Bear with a daughter named Hannah... we think! The legend also says that Minerva was in the Trail of Tears.
Look at the first Map Below. This is Hawkins County, Tennessee. It is next to the Cherokee National Forest and is indeed in Cherokee Territory.
In the 1880 Census (in Hawkins County) we find George W. Bair and his wife "Manerva" (see Photo 2, Census form of the Bair family). Don't worry too much about the spelling in Census data. Census takers spelled things however they wanted to. It is possible the family spelled their name as "Bear" but the census-taker spelled it as "Bair".
A few things are interesting:
1. "Bear" sounds like a good Indian name but Manerva's married name is Bare, and her maiden name was Minerva Elizabeth Carpenter. On Lizzie's marriage papers, they spell it "BARE"; in the 1880 Census, it is "BAIR". On Lizzie's Marriage Certificate (photo 5), they list it as BARE.
2. Mister Bair is George W. Bair, a very white name and listed as White in the Census.
3. The census-taker listed all family members as "White" in the census. Click the 3rd photo. It is the instructions for the census taker. However, I looked at the census-taker's habit of listing race. he is very good with listing White (W) and Black (B) but does not list Mulatto (M) or Indian (I) on the 9 pages before or after. This indicates that, either there were no Indians or Mulattos in the neighborhood OR that he lists Indians living with Whites as White and Indians living with Blacks as Black; this is a possibility. George and Minerva's children are also listed as White (W) in the 1880 Census.
Another problem is regarding the Trail of Tears (see photo 4, Trail of Tears), which took place in 1835. Records show that Minerva was born in Tennessee in 1838 and Hannah was born in Tennessee in 1878. The Cherokee movement originated in Georgia and Carolina and moved through Nashville. If Minerva was involved at all, she would have been a baby.
