Benjamin BENNETT, b. abt. 1735 in Clinch Valley, VA. In the census 1784 in Surry County, NC, Only Bennett listed. Also in the 1790 census in Stokes Co, NC.  Died bef 1810 (aft 1791 bef 1810).

1790 Stokes County, NC census; 2 white males over 18 years old (born before 1774); 5 white males under 18 years old (1774 - 1790); 3 white females; 0 slaves
In 1789, Surry County NC was divided into Surry County and Stokes County. In 1849, Stokes County was divided into Stokes County and Forsythe County.

"Benjamin Bennett was born in the Clinch Valley of Virginia about 1735. About 1765, he married a Miss Smith and moved to what is now the Cappella area of Stokes County, then Rowan County. In the partial census of 1784, he was the only Bennett in what was by then Surry County. In the census of 1800 he was listed with five males under sixteen, two over sixteen, himself and one other, and three females, one of which was his wife. He evidently died before 1810 as he was not included in the census for that year.

The Bennetts listed in 1810 who were his sons: Thomas, between 26 and 45; William, between 26 and 45; and Richard, between 16 and 26. Asa and John were both between 26 and 45 and could have been his sons.

The younger Benjamin listed himself in 1810 as single and the head of the family. The only member of his family besides himself was one female over 45 who was, without a doubt, his mother." - by Robert Carroll

About 1788, he married Lettie, the daughter of Chief Running Horse of the Cherokee Tribe.
At least three sons were born to this couple: Meredy, William and Isham. For some reason, Thomas was not listed in the census of 1790 or 1800. There is no record of when his Indian bride Lettie died, but on August 2, 1803, he married Jenny West.  In the 1810 census, he was listed with one male under ten, on between 26 and 45 (himself), and three females under ten, and one between 16 and 26 (his wife).  He died between 1840 and 1850.
