Veteran Journalist Dies Suddenly

Jack Norwood Bennett of Siloam, whose retirement in August 1996 ended a
44-year newspaper career, died suddenly Wednesday in Northern Hospital of
Surry County. He was 74 and death was unexpected.
Bennett was the associate editor of The Yadkin Ripple in Yadkinville when he
retired. He began his newspaper career in North Carolina, shortly after
graduating from the School of Journalism at the University of North Carolina
in Chapel Hill. His first job was with the Catawba News-Enterprise and then
he joined the staff of News & Views, an afternoon daily at Jacksonville.
In 1953, he came to work for the Mount Airy Times, remaining with that
newspaper until 1966 when he and his wife, Bonnie (nee Smith), moved to
Roanoke, Va., where Bennett was copy editor of the Roanoke Times.
The Bennetts bought a tobacco farm at Siloam and, in the mid-1970s, Jack
Bennett found himself working back at the Times. He remained with the local
weekly until 1979, when he joined the staff of the Yadkin Ripple.
Bennett, the son of the late Caleb and Evelyn Tolbert Bennett, graduated
from Mount Airy High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a medic and drove an ambulance in the Hawaiian Islands.
After World War II, he graduated from Brevard College, where he was a member
of the class of 1949.
Bennett also was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, was a charter member
of the Mount Airy Jaycees, from when the club was reorganized in 1954, and
had been a member of the Mount Airy Kiwanis Club.
Graveside services for Bennett will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in Skyline
Memory Gardens by Dr. Wilford Lyerly.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Jane; a stepdaughter, Jean Badgett
of Mount Airy; a stepson, Dennis Sawyers of Willkesboro; and two sisters,
Betty Robertson of Mount Airy and Ann Branscome, Hillsville, Va.
