James BENNETT,
born about 1785, NC; died WFT Est. 1829-1877
    Farmer, School Teacher
In 1789, Surry County NC was divided into Surry County and Stokes County. In 1849, Stokes County was divided into Stokes County and Forsythe County.

married Mary "Polly" EVANS, 9 Nov 1814, Stokes County, NC (The source says "Marriage Certificate" but it didn't say where the Certificate is located. If anyone can get the certificate ( a copy or a scanned image) from Stokes County Courthouse, I will post it here on this website.)

The following notes are not mine (Max C. Bennett's) and I don't know how to get in contact with these people. Their research is extensive and we Bennett's appreciate and will attempt to add to their research. The source for below was quoted as Source 2.

There must be a last name of Walker in either James or Mary's family.
[Broderbund WFT Vol. 17, Ed. 1, Tree #1576, Date of Import: 7 Sep 1998] Stokes Co, NC Book 5 b.546a
"Indenture, James Bennett of Stokes Co, NC, to John Henley- $40 - 15 acres & 50 poles track on W side of Henley's -- ret Owen Walker's land- south along the Widow Bennett's dower to David Walker's land." (Grace Hoxley found this)

"Also James Bennett conveys all her right & title of "my mother Mary Bennett's dower" which is 1\4 at her decease.  3 Nov 1814 proved Dec term 1814" (Grace found this also)

    1. James could have a sister named Elizabeth, who married Benjamin HUDGINS 3 Sep 1817.
    2. Benjamin was a witness in James and Polly's wedding.
    3. James could have a sister named Susannah who married Owen WALKER16 Sep 1812 in Stokes Co, NC
    4. James could have a brother named John who married Rachel WALKER 3 Apr 1815.
    5. James could have a sister named Mary C who married a David WALKER23 Nov 1811.
    6. There was a Coland BENNETT who married a Harrison Hudgins 3 Mar 1808, all in Stokes Co, NC.
    7. There is a John BENNETT married to Lucy King 4 Mar 1803.
    8. There is a Thomas BENNETT married to Jenny Vest 2 Aug 1803.
    9. Benjamin married Elizabeth Biggs 3 Nov 1810 all in Stokes Co, NC. (Joan found this)

A lot of the information came from family members. See Martha Mae Minks notes.

We checked and we could not find any connection to the Bennett family from a book called "OUR BENNETT FAMILY" Descendents of Richard b. circa 1710. d.1764 and Anne d circa 1780 lived in Edgecombe Co, NC. Granville Co in 1746 became Bute Co in 1764.
There children were Christian, Sarah, Richard Jr, Mark, William, Moses, Martha, James, Anne, and Amey.  I found all kinds of information on this family, but soon found out the James in this family is not our James.

LDS church has a selected entries Richard Bennett married a Mary Cook some of the children they list are Elizabeth, Henry, Robeson, NC.
Under Brunswick Co, VA Marriages Richard Bennett m Mary Cook 1 Jan 1782, Richard son of Benjamin BENNETT.
There is a Richard BENNETT b. ca. 1762 d. 15 Sep 1814 PVT m Mary Cook VA.

James and Polly were married in Stokes Co, NC there are listed a lot of Bennett's in Stokes Co, NC during James's life span.

Martha Mae Minks Becker received a letter from a Wylene Arnold. She is part of the Aaron Greene Bennett line. This is what Martha wrote:

"Joan I was really disappointed in the material sent to me by Wylene Arnold.  I am sending you the material on her line. ( I put Martha's information in my computer, so it is on the Family descendants sheet.) She is part of Aaron Greene Bennett's line- the last child of James and Polly Bennett, I will copy the letter her great-aunt wrote to her mother on April 20, 1938. I have to agree with Grace Hoxsey. Many people {including you and me} have done research on this family, and we did not come up with the same conclusion as Clara Emma Victoria Bennett Gordon. I trust what Grace Hoxsey, you and I came up with far more than the daughter of Aaron Greene Bennett, son of James and Polly.

The letter from Clara:

"I have found out who we Bennetts are. My father (Aaron Greene) always said that his grandfather was a Captain in the Revolutionary War and that he was a Frenchman. I have found out that my father's grandfather was Captain Peter Bennett and that his father was Brigadier General in the French and Indian War. So here it is:

Richard Bennett- Brig Gen
son
Peter Bennett- Captain
son
James Bennett- School teacher
son
Aaron Bennett- Stone mason
son
Ira Bennett-farmer

Aaron Greene Bennett, the seventh and last child of James and Mary (Polly Evans] Bennett was born in North Carolina and traveled with his family to Indian Creek Township, Monroe Co, IN circa 1830. He served in the Mexican War 1847-48 and received an honorable discharge dated 21 July 1848. He was listed as a Private, 5ft 11 in, sallow complexion, gray eyes and dark hair. Farming was his occupation. Aaron and his wife Mary Ann and their child, Jacob C b. 1868 d. 1869 are buried in the East Cemetery, section 28. (out of Oolitic, IN.

There was more to the letter but is all in the descendants sheets

This is from Martha Mae Mink Becker letter.

"Joan, I feel certain James's Mother was Mary, She lived next door to the Walker family. As you know, James and Mary (Polly) named their fourth child , Hannah Walker Bennett. We have the DAR Patriot index, which states that Captain Peter Bennett, of NC born 1750, died 4/9/1822 , was married to Elizabeth Pomfrett, not Mary. Clara stated that Peter had two children, one a girl and one boy named JOHN!  I find it difficult to think anyone would name their child John James or James John. Those names just don't go together. You and I feel that James had several siblings both brothers and sisters, I really think Wylene's aunt Clara was more interested in proving that the BENNETT kids had a "good" background. What's to say that those people were "good" just because they were officers in the Revolutionary War? It's a shame that with all the people who have researched the BENNETT family that we cannot find the correct names farther back than James and Polly BENNETT. I do believe that Aaron served in the Mexican War and was a stone mason later on."

I need to include another part of Clara's letter.

"Peter was born 1750 and died 1822 had two children 1 girl , 1 boy . The girl married a man by the name of Bearden and moved to Knox Co, TN. The boy's name was John and he moved to IN.  I am sure that is absolutely correct and you see that is a nice background for all the Bennett kids.
"Kevin, I believe like Martha and Grace that James father was not Peter. I well still search for James's parents. If you find anything on this family please write me."

Mary G. "Polly" Evans, born abt 1784, Stokes County, NC; died WFT Est. 1829-1879
Father is unknown , Mother is unknown
married James Bennett 9 Nov 1814, Stokes County, NC. (The source says "Marriage Certificate" but it didn't say where the Certificate is located. If anyone can get the certificate ( a copy or a scanned image) from Stokes County Courthouse, I will post it here on this website.)

In 1789, Surry County NC was divided into Surry County and Stokes County. In 1849, Stokes County was divided into Stokes County and Forsythe County.
Mary could have a brother named John W. Evans m Mary Hudgins 22/2/1813

Mary's middle initial "G." is taken from the following e-mail from Michael Tuttle to me (Max C. Bennett) on 28 Feb 2001. I can be reached at my E-MAIL ADDRESS.

Max,
Found some pertinent, specific info, thought I'd at least post it to the right board (ha!)
Stokes and Surry Counties, North Carolina
Following are abstracts from pension applications of Revolutionary War veterans or widows taken from National Archives microfilm. All have a connection to Stokes or Surry County, NC. Unless otherwise noted, Elizabeth Osenbaugh personally abstracted the information.
Special thanks to Elizabeth for all of her hard work and for contributing this document to the Stokes County GenWeb site. This is a work in progress.
Update - August 24, 1999 - Elizabeth's e-mail is no longer working, please contact Faye Moran if you have her new address, or if you have information to add to this project.

The George Washington Papers 1741-1799 at the Library of Congress.
Elizabeth included references to Virgil D. White, Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files (Waynesboro, TN: Nat. Hist. Pub. Co. 1990), for some files not personally abstracted.
Elizabeth's ancestors Abel and Lucy (BENNETT) EDWARDS migrated from Stokes Co., NC, to Monroe Co., IN, about 1830 and then to Lucas Co., IA, by 1855, as did a number of Stokes and Surry County families. She believes Abel EDWARDS (b. 1810) to be a nephew of Joseph Edwards, Revolutionary War veteran. Lucy was the daughter of James BENNETTand Mary G. (Polly) EVANS, who married in Stokes County in 1814.

The only records of Evans that I find are through marriage into other families, as follows:

- Charles Banner, born September 9, 1773, married on January 25, 1798 in Stokes to Rebecca Evans.

- Charles McAnnally died in Stokes County on 7 August 1810,... his will and estate papers name his children... Lois married John Evans,...

Both Charles Banner and Charles McAnnally were of Germanton, the original seat of Stokes, 1789 - 1849. Germanton lies approximately 10 - 15 miles southeast of the Capella community via the "Old Quaker Road", now known as Friendship Road, and so the Bennetts and Evans of Stokes, while not exactly neighbors, were in close enough proximity to be acquainted.

Hope this is helpful to you, best of luck in your search.
